Crimea and the Crimean Tatars: A Film Event

A special screening of the new documentary

“A Struggle for Home: The Crimean Tatars”

Minneapolis, April 8, 2016. – Maidan Minnesota in partnership with the Ukrainian American Community Center invites the general public to attend a special screening of the new documentary about Crimean Tatars on May 20th, 2016 at 6:30pm.

Produced by Ukrainian American filmmaker, Christina Paschyn, “A Struggle for Home: The Crimean Tatars,” explores the history and culture of the Crimean Tatars, the indigenous people of Crimea, Ukraine, and chronicles the events surrounding the 2014 Russian invasion and occupation of the peninsula. Filmed in Crimea in 2012, this powerful film includes interviews with historians, survivors of the 1944 deportation, Crimean Tatar leaders, young activists, and pro-Russian nationalists.

During a executive committee meeting of the World Congress of Crimean Tatars (2016) and an international conference on Mass Violations of Human Rights in Crimea, Vytautas Landsbergis claimed that the Crimean Tatars are "the new enslaved nation in today's Europe.”

“A Struggle for Home” recently was awarded Best International Film at the 2016 Washington, DC Independent Film Festival, received the Silver Award at the Spotlight Documentary Film Awards in 2015 and Award of Merit at the IndieFest Film Awards in 2015.

Christina Paschyn is an international multimedia journalist based in Doha, Qatar, where she also teaches journalism at Northwestern University. Her work has appeared on Euronews, the Christian Science Monitor, and Time Magazine, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, among other publications. She says, “This story [Crimean Tatars] deserved to be recognized and protected.”

The film will be followed by discussion and Q&A with director Christina Paschyn, and updates on the situation in Crimea from Crimean Tatar activists in Kyiv and Crimea via Skype. Expected to participate in the discussion is a representative from the Ukrainian Consulate in Chicago. Donations are suggested to support Crimean Tatars adversely impacted by the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia.
